Eco-Friendly Aspects of the Health Care bill

Going green can help your health

Everyone has by now heard about the new health care bill. And like it or not, some sort of version of it will be here shortly. Although there is no need to go into the particulars of what it is and what it does - there are plenty of other sources of that information! - there are some interesting green little caveats that are contained within.

Certain environmental catastrophes will be medically covered in full. The example here are the people that have been exposed to asbestos from a mine in Libby, Montana. For over 10 years, the senator of that state has lobbied the government to get help for these people who have been inadvertently exposed. The health care bill will supply them with the medical care they need.

There is an incredible amount of funding through the bill to change people's lifestyles. There will be money available for counseling, self-help programs and seminars. All of them provide technical assistance as well as problem-solving skills. That may sound funny, but the health problems the bill looks to solve are from setting up programs focusing on topics such as healthy eating, physical exercise and cessation of tobacco use.

Both nutrition and exercise are known preventative steps for living a healthier life, and if someone is healthier, he or she won’t need expensive medical treatment. One can only imagine that the world of organic food is going to benefit greatly from this part of the bill, as the healthiest of eating starts with organic foods.

This aspect of the bill will even carry over to the work site. It aims to create a work environment that is less stressful, encourages physical participation before, during and after work, and even goes so far as to promote nutritional foods in vending machines! How about an organic turkey sandwich for lunch? Put your buck in the slot and pull the lever.

The bill as a whole is aimed at employers, and it is not mandatory for employees to participate, but the whole idea is that these programs will be put in place so that anyone can. Perhaps the best part is that this same funding that will be available at the school level to implement these same kinds of healthy lifestyle programs as well. Providing children with healthy choices means they will learn healthy behaviors for adulthood.

The fact that our government is behind the notion of giving the population a choice to be healthy naturally is a complete turnaround from the more accepted ham-and-egg lifestyle with a shot and a beer chaser. Because Action speaks louder than words, the health care bill is going to fuel the health and nutrition field even more, where organics and natural remedies rule.
