Commit to you partner...and the environment
by Dale Y, The Green Guy |
Aaah, weddings. The happy bride, the handsome groom, the flower children, maids of honor, best men, tears of joy, with reception to follow. With all those good tidings and love floating everywhere, it’s hard to imagine a wedding can actually be green. But, here are some neat and simple ways to make any wedding as green as possible.
The first thing you want to check out is this website called www.greeneleganceweddings.com. As their motto goes, “We're here to help you plan your environmentally and socially responsible green wedding - and make sure it's elegant, too!” They offer tips and strategies to make any wedding green, and besides, it’s just a nice place to check out what you can do for the environment on that special day.
The next stop is the Pink Envelope Project that sponsors Brides Against Breast Cancer. Now, besides the fact it is worthwhile charity organization where you can pass out pink envelopes at your wedding shower or reception for donations, they also feature recycled wedding gowns. It seems to me anytime clothing can be recycled, especially such material intensive garments like wedding dresses, that’s a great way to go a little green.
Moving right along, check out GreenKarat.com. They recycle old jewelry, to help quell the effects of destructive mining practices. There is enough mined gold already out in the open, that truly 50 years worth of jewelry can be made by it without mining another ounce! They have an incredible array of used and recycled jewelry for any occasion. This is the most environmentally friendly thing you can do when you slide a ring from Green Karat on the bride or grooms finger.
Lastly, check out Second Harvest. This is a food bank that is the nations largest charitable hunger relief organization. They take donated food and get it into the hands of over 25 million low income hungry people in the US. At any wedding or reception, set up a barrel or two for canned goods, and announce it on your invitation everyone should bring something with them. If your reception is huge and there is a lot of usable and sealed food left over, arrangements can be made to get that to Second Harvest as well.
These are some great ideas for having a green wedding, and if even one of these are used during any ceremony, it will help out the planet a bit and make you feel good about doing it too!
