Great music and dedication to the environment.
by Dale Y, The Green Guy |
The Green Guy certainly loves his music. And although I haven’t been going to as many concerts as I would like to, there is beginning to be a trend in the popular music world about going green. Initially, that’s difficult to fathom, since we tend to think of concerts as a place to party and have a devil-may-care attitude. But not anymore. Many artists are practicing green ways when bringing you a concert, and here are some of the more notable ones and what they are doing.
John Mayer — partnered with Reverb, an environmental watchdog for the music community that teaches and educates about environmental sustainability. Mayer also uses biodiesel for his buses, sets up an eco-village for the fans and sells eco-friendly merchandise.
Jack Johnson — Builds an eco-village at every concert, always provides separate bins for waste and recyclables, uses water efficient showers and CFLs backstage and donates all leftover food to a local food pantry.
The Dave Matthews Band—They use bio-diesel trucks and busses, sell eco-friendly merchandise, buy carbon offsets and contract with Reverb to keep their concerts as green as can be.
Radiohead—One of the most eco-conscious bands out there, plastic anything at their concerts is considered ‘contraband’ as one member off their opening acts says. They use bio fuels at all times, they haul their own goods and don’t do airfreight, and basically manage everything at their concerts to leave as little environmental impact as possible.
Melissa Etheridge—She is famous for being involved in the green scene, gives eco friendly tips on her website, and leaves as little an environmental footprint at her concerts that she can.
Top this off with the Bumbershoot Festival which is thought of as the premier eco-event of them all. Bumbershoot features top name bands like Beck and Stone Temple Pilots, and they feature organic cotton merchandise, recycling bins everywhere you look, and they even attempt to get the plastic water bottles out by having many ‘hydration stations’ as they call them, so that people leave plastic water bottles alone. They even feature an eco art show to boot!
Green is happening all over, in the cities, the country and even at musical concerts like the ones mentioned above. This may all seem like a drop in the bucket to some. But to those who go and participate, they learn what can and is being done to green our planet and how everyone can pitch in and help. That type of education, especially in the long run, may be priceless.

The Duhks are another great band that tour in a biodiesel-fueled vehicle, eat local food, and generally try to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible:

Please don't forget about country singer Keith Urban who uses "green" tour buses and performed for at the Live Earth concert wearing a T shirt that helped raise awareness about global warming. His fan club also sells t shirts made from organically grown cotton.
